1. Pick one quick win below. Just one.
2. Open the guide that goes with it and copy the template.
3. Change the store name and the tone so it sounds like you, and use it on your next customer.

If you run an independent mattress, appliance, electronics or furniture store, you don't need an "AI strategy." You need fewer missed calls, more follow-ups, better reviews and a few hours back each week.

That's realistic. CFIB found that Canadian businesses using generative AI save about one net hour a day, but only 39% of firms with fewer than 5 staff are using it yet (CFIB). Small stores have the most to gain and the most room to catch up.

Here's where to start.

The 10 quick wins

1. Follow up every quote and walk-out within the hour.
Most shoppers who say "I'll think about it" mean not yet. A short, friendly text the same day keeps you top of mind. → Follow up every quote and walk-out without lifting a finger

2. Turn on missed-call text-back.
When you can't pick up, the caller gets an instant text back so they don't go phone the next store. → Stop losing sales to missed calls

3. Answer the after-hours questions.
Hours, financing, delivery area, "do you have it in stock?" A simple website chat assistant can handle these at 10 p.m. → Stop losing sales to missed calls

4. Ask every customer for a Google review.
Put your Google review link on receipts and in your thank-you text. → Get more Google reviews and reply to every one in seconds

5. Reply to every review, the good and the bad.
Let AI write a first draft that mentions what the customer actually said, then you approve it. → Get more Google reviews and reply to every one in seconds

6. Send a day-before delivery reminder.
Confirm the window, list the prep steps, and let customers reschedule by reply, so your truck doesn't show up to a locked door. → Delivery texts that cut no-shows and "Where's my truck?" calls

7. Write product descriptions in minutes.
Paste in the spec sheet and get clear, honest copy for your website and tags. → 15 copy-paste AI prompts for dealers

8. Turn one vendor promo into a week of posts.
One prompt turns a sale flyer into Facebook posts, a Google Business Profile update and an email. → 15 copy-paste AI prompts for dealers

9. Write tricky vendor emails faster.
Late shipments, damaged freight, warranty follow-ups: get a polite, firm draft in seconds. → 15 copy-paste AI prompts for dealers

10. Train new staff with role-play.
Have AI play a hesitant customer so a new salesperson can practise handling objections before they're on the floor. → 15 copy-paste AI prompts for dealers

Three ground rules

  • You stay in charge. AI writes the first draft; a person checks it before it goes to a customer. Read it out loud. If it doesn't sound like you across the counter, fix it.

  • Keep private info private. Don't paste customers' full names, addresses, phone numbers or card details into a public AI chat tool. Use placeholders like [Name].

  • Get permission before you text or email. In Canada, CASL covers commercial texts and emails. In the US, the TCPA covers texting. In short: get the customer's OK, say who you are, and make opting out easy ("Reply STOP"). This isn't legal advice, so check with your advisor or your texting provider.

Where to go next

If you only do one thing, start with #1, following up on walk-outs. A Harvard audit of 2,241 US firms found the average reply to a web lead took 42 hours, and firms that replied within an hour were about 7 times as likely to qualify the lead (source). Getting back to people quickly is the cheapest edge an independent store has.
